May 7-31: Ascension: Photographic Exibition

Ascension: Ritualistic Acts of Pain and Salvation: There is a profound peace in a penetrating pain. There is a grey zone between agony and ecstasy. There are bonds to be born and bettered. There is the flesh to be reconsidered. There is the self to be reassessed. Depicture a harrowing ritual, a visceral fusion of flesh and metal, a brazen balance of gravity, physiology and the crudest of technology.
Over the past five years, Toronto photographer and suspension practitioner Philip Barbosa has been traveling over much of North America to proselytize and document a culture few of us are even aware of. His fine black and white portraits capture the private moments of extraordinary individuals, and his work may well engender a new breed of model, to say nothing of a new dimension of photography.
This show is part of the Toronto Contact Photography Festival.
