After a five-year hiatus, spinning in NYC, Die
J! Mars is bringing his funky electro-tech acid house sounds back to his
hometown of Toronto. When I was a kid spinning at CHRY 105.5 FM, I imagined the
scenes in the states, NYC in particular, were superior to what we had going in
Toronto. Now after playing all the clubs here, I can honestly say there s a
real hunger for innovation in the Toronto club scenes that keeps pushing it to
new levels . You can feel the excitement. And I plan on being part of it.
In the early 90s, Die J! Mars brought his style and sound to such
Toronto venues as Catch 22, Velvet Underground, Savage Garden and Freakshow.
After moving to NYC in 2000, he quickly became the #1 fetish DJ spinning every
Black and Blue Ball playing main rooms of the Limelight, Slimelight UK, Torture
Garden UK, Webster Hall, and Spirit (Twilo).
As Electroclash hit NYC,
Die J! Mars was at the boards for many of the music s launching events. Quickly
picked up by Superstar DJ Keoki, Mars becomes part of his Too Far Gone DJ Crew
. Fashion Week has Die J! Mars sharing the spotlight with Eric Morillo in the
main room of Crobar.
In NYC, Die J Mars style evolves. Once pigeon
holed as a goth-only DJ, Mars becomes #1 Electropop DJ NYC when he wins a
battle of the Djs thrown by Ultra Records in 2004. Since then he has spun
alongside such luminaries as Boy George, Supa DJ Dimitri, Adam X, Miss Dinky,
Heather Hart, and Jackie Christie.
In 2002, Die J! Mars forms an
electronic pop group Rise NYC, programming the beats and playing guitar. Mise
en Scene , their debut release, produced by Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave and the
Bad Seeds) fand worked on by Supa DJ Dmitri (Deelite), features remixes by
Genesis P-Orridge, Superstar DJ Keoki, the Dirty Criminals, and Hong Kong
Counterfeit. Tracks by Rise NYC have been included in compilations by Larry Tee
(Gentle Electric), DJ Hell (DJ Hell "Gigolo 8 ) and on Hong Kong Counterfeit VS
Various Artists (Kinetik-Media). The indie single What s da T by Binary Starr
System, his brand new trip-hop group, features an exclusive remix by David J
(Bauhaus/Love and Rockets).
